There's lots happening for the next few weeks including BP Pro-Am, a few show debates and the final night dinner, so here goes...
Women's Debate:
This Thursday, 9 October, at 6pm we will be holding a debate between six of the top female debaters in the Society judged by Jennifer Curtin from the Politics Department on a fairly controversial issue of importance to women. This is shaping up to be a pretty special event so please arrive promptly at Stone lecture theatre at 6pm this Thursday!
BP Pro Am Round Two:
Last week saw the successful launch of the BP Pro Am tournament. This Thursday straight after the Women's debate we will be holding Round Two. The topics and draw will be announced at approximately 7pm so please come along to both the Women's Debate and round two.
If you could not make it last week then still come along and we will put you into a BP style debate - it just means you wont be formally considered as part of the competition table.
Election Candidiates Debate:
On Monday 13 October at 6pm the Debating Society in association with AUSA has organised an Auckland Central election debate.
The debate be held in Clocktower 039, near the General Library. Speakers include Judith Tizard from Labour, National's Nikki Kaye, Denise Roche of the Green Party, and Aaron Galey-Young representing United Future. The chair of the debate will be Raymond Miller from the Political Studies Department.
This will be a great chance for you (especially if you're in the Auckland Central electorate) to hear the candidates speak, and a good opportunity to think about the key issues in the upcoming election! Questions are encouraged afterwards, and everything should be wrapped up by 8pm.
Max Harris - the Club Vice-President - will be opening the event, and there is a large debsoc contingent attending already - so come along!
Final Night Dinner:
As some of you noticed, there was a typo in my last email. The final of the BP Pro Am tournament will be Thursday 24 October while the Final Night Dinner will be Friday 24 October.
The dinner is a casual and social way to celebrate the end of the debating year and is famous for good times. This year the dinner will be atMai Thai (in the city near the Sky tower) 7pm on Friday 24th October. It will be a $25 per person deal which includes 5 different mains and unlimited rice. It is BYO wine only and corkage will be waived as part of the deal.
We do need to get an idea of numbers for the booking so please email back if you are keen!
