Oratory Competition:
As mentioned last semester the Oratory Comp is now scheduled for next Thursday 18 September at 7pm.
Speeches are 8-10 minutes long, with no notes allowed. The emphasis is on rhetorical skills and oratory techniques, with there being more of a focus on manner and delivery than in debating. Speeches can be on any topic.
There's still time to enter so email in if you're keen! I am assuming the others who already entered are still keen so if you're not please let me know.
SGM:
The same night at 6pm Thursday 18 September we will be holding the much anticipated Special General Meeting. The sole purpose of the SGM will be to approve a new Constitution for the Society. Copies of the old and new Constitution as well as a summary of the changes can be found on the front page of our website (www.debating.co.nz) in a post about half way down the page.
We anticipate the Constitution to be completed in about 45 minutes just ahead of the start of the Oratory Comp. It's important that as many people as possible make it along both so that the SGM is valid and because the Oratory Comp will be awesome. Will be a night not to be missed!
Week Two (Thurs 25 Sept)
The following week we will be holding the Annual General Meeting which hopefully will take place under the rules of our new Constitution and will be where we elect next years Debsoc Exec and deal with all sorts of other exciting AGM business. The AGM is the only thing better than an SGM so keep it free too.
A Special Congratulations:
In all the hype surrounding Joynt Scroll I forgot to mention one thing in my last email. On top of all the successes I have already written about I almost forgot one of the most exciting pieces of news. At the NZ Universities Debating Council AGM (held at Joynt) the 2008 President Jordan Ward (from here in Auckland) finished his term and our own Debsoc past President Desley Horton was elected as his replacement. So congrats to Desley, the new President of the NZUDC. It's great to have one of our members in charge of that Council for the second year in a row!
