Maori Party Show Debate
As I'm sure you've all been made aware of, the Society is hosting a show debate tonight at 6:30pm in Engineering School Lecture Theatre 1.439, political heavyweights, journalists, and media commentators will debate the motion 'This House Believes the National-Maori Party Confidence and Supply Agreement is Good for Maori'.
Affirming the motion will be John Tamihere (former politician and media personality), and Matthew Hooton (National Business Review Columnist and political commentator). Negating the motion will be Shane Jones (Labour MP) and Rod Oram (Sunday Star Times journalist). The debate will be chaired by the Maori Student President, Kingi Snelgar, and will also include top speakers from our very own Society.
Following the conclusion of the debate, there will be a chance for audience members to participate in a Q & A session with all speakers involved. It would be great to see as many people there as possible, so do be sure to spread the word about what is shaping up to be a great start to the show debate calendar!
Women's Tea Party
The society's Women's Tea Party was held this Sunday and was (apparently) a great success! The exec would like to thank our Women's and Minorities Officer Steph Thompson for organising it. Thanks must also go to Arena Williams (who hosted the event). The society is pleased to offer events like this, and looks forward to bringing you a women's show debate later in the year.
First Year Rep Elections
As we have mentioned in previous mailouts we will be holding elections this Thursday for a first year representative on the executive. All paid up members of the society can vote, so make sure to be there to have your say.
A number of other important things need to be said in relation to the elections.
1. If you are interested in running (and are a first year) please email in to the club account ASAP. Please do not do this lightly. The position carries significant responsibility and would require a strong commitment to the society for the rest of the year.
2. All candidates will have a chance to speak on the night. Speeches will be 3 minutes in length, with no powerpoints allowed. The speaking order will be random. This will be followed by a brief Q and A session for the audience to ask the candidates about their policies and qualifications for the role.
Debating this Thursday
After the first year rep elections we will be running a normal round of debating. This will be down in the law school as normal, so we'll see you all in Stone at 6.00pm! You need to show up and sign the register (which will be right outside Stone) before 6:30pm if you wish to debate - debates will start at 7pm.
